Verdict. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM was announced in August 2005 as a lightweight standard zoom lens for professionals. Introduced on the same day as the EOS 5D, it’s an ideal match for Canon’s ‘affordable’ full frame body, although equally suited to other full-frame bodies including the 1Ds Mark II and 35mm models.
Unfortunately neither is the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 USM L IS II. While there are differences on detail level, the performance is roughly similar which is a little depressing given all the years that passed by since the mk I was designed. 50 megapixels are a torture ground for all lenses but it’s too much for the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 USM L IS
The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM is an excellent standard zoom lens that, as you'd perhaps expect, is much better than the 10-year-old Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM that it replaces, which incidentally is one of Canon's most popular lenses. It offers a very versatile focal range whilst being tack-sharp from 24mm to 50mm, both in the centre
Does the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens have a better chart than its predecessor? Yes. However, the difference does not appear to be striking. The MTF charts point to the II's corners performing better at 24mm and the center appears sharper at 105mm.
